Die Veranstaltung setzt sich mit den kleinsten Einheiten der Sprache auseinander, nämlich mit den Lauten bzw. den Buchstaben und ihrer regelgeleiteten Kombination. Die Studierenden lernen im Teilbereich der Phonetik die Prozesse kennen, die die Lautproduktion und Lautperzeption bestimmen. Der Bereich der Phonologie fokussiert die Prozesse der Kombination von Lauten zu Lautketten wie Silben und Wörtern. Hier erfahren die Studierenden, welche Prozesse in den Sprachen der Welt vollzogen werden und welche davon im Deutschen zu finden sind. Mit der Orthographie wird Bezug zur geschriebenen Sprache hergestellt, die sich einerseit an der phonetischen Form orientert, andererseit aber auch anderen Regeln folgt.
