Beobachtungsdaten können auf zweierlei Weise erhoben werden. Zum einen fertigen Soziologen Protokolle ihrer Beobachtungen an, zum anderen werden soziale Handlungen technisch unterstützt als Videodaten registriert. Im Rahmen der Übung sollen erstens die Routinen der Protokollierung erlernt werden, zweitens wird in die Grundlagen der Videoethnographie eingeführt. Neben dem praktischen Erlernen beider Verfahren der Beobachtung, soll sich mit den unterschiedlichen Datentypen, die Beobachtungsprotokolle auf der einen Seite und audiovisuelle Registrierungen auf der anderen Seite darstellen, auseinandergesetzt werden.
