Nach einer Einführung in zentrale Fragestellungen und Begriffe der Familiensoziologie und einem Überblick über wesentliche Strukturmerkmale des Politikfeldes Familienpolitik und seiner Entwicklungslinien werden wesentliche Aspekte des Wandels von Familie analysiert und aktuelle Entwicklungen in der Familiensoziologie und -politik auf dem Hintergrund des Wandels von Familie und der Geschlechterverhältnisse diskutiert.
Unter soziologischen Aspekten werden z.B. das Innenleben der Familie, die Rolle der Familie in der Gesellschaft, die verschiedenen Lebensformen und die Anforderungen der Erwerbsarbeit an die Familie betrachtet.
Als aktuelle familienpolitische Themen werden u.a. der im Frühjahr 2012 erscheinende 8. Familienbericht („Zeit für Familie“), Kinderarmut und Kinderregelsätze und die vom Bundesfamilienministerium eingeleitete wissenschaftliche Evaluation der 13 wichtigsten familienpolitischen Maßnahmen behandelt.
