Victorian England is notorious for its rigorous separation of the public and the private spheres, allocating men to the former and men to the latter. In his fictional and non-fictional work Charles Dickens not only takes up and reflects upon related Victorian ideals, such as the ‘angel in the house’, but contributes to the discursive creation of which. The best-known manifestation of his notion of domestic bliss as epitomised by Christmas celebrations is probably A Christmas Carol. Nonetheless, his novels are replete with dysfunctional families, characters that straddle the boundary between the public and the private, or female characters that elude any clear-cut classification as ‘fallen woman’ or ‘angel in the house’. This seminar will take a closer look at a selection of such characters with regard to their relation to Victorian stereotypes and the negotiation of gender roles which they express.
