Prof. Luciane Passaglia from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Porto Alegre, Brasil will give a lecture in a two-week block format (6 or 7 lectures of two hours each) covering physiology, free-living and symbiotic life styles of plant growth promoting bacteria; metabolism, genetics and regulation of nitrogen fixation; isolation and cultivation of these bacteria and metagenomics studies using 16S rDNA cloning and metagenome sequencing for culture-independent characterization. The lecture provides MSc and doctoral students with an overview on this group of bacteria, their association with plants, applications in tropic and European agriculture and cutting-edge diagnostic tools like metagenome sequencing, thus, it bridges teaching and research while at the same time offering insights into an international collaboration.
The lecture is associated with the MSc study programs Genome-based Systems Biology (GBSB) and Bioinformatics and Genome research (BIG) through the lecture Gene & Genome (ekvv 209261) as well as with the Graduate School CLIB2021 on Industrial Biotechnology. It is optional.
