392255 Educational tools for neuromorphic VLSI circuits (Pj) (SoSe 2012)

Contents, comment

Neuromorphic engineering (NE) is an emerging research field that has been attempting to identify neural types of computational principles by implementing biophysically realistic models of neural systems in Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) technology. Remarkable progress has been made recently, and complex artificial neural sensory-motor systems can be built using this technology. However, significant progress has been hindered by lack of proper interdisciplinary training programs. The NE research community is relatively small and there is a strong need for training students in this field.

The aim of this project is to build tools suited for teaching neuromorphic engineering. Specifically we will design, implement and test a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) for hosting a neuromorphic VLSI chip (classchip2005rev2008). The PCB will be fabricated and used for teaching starting from the WS 2012/13.

In this project I will give introductory lectures to cover the following topics:
- PCB design
- Neuromorphic circuits implemented in the classchip2005rev2008
- Soldering tutorial
- Circuit measurements

After designing the PCB the students participating in this project will populate it, test its functionality and produce a user manual. The board and relative documentation will be used for teaching.

No prior experience in PCB design required!
