This course looks at the development of a character’s identity in the context of both the fictional realm they inhabit and the social and cultural influences the author is subjected to. The choice of texts covers important periods in the history of the British novel and offers a range of narrators, plot structures and different types and genders of authors. An interdisciplinary approach to the concept of identity will be applied in order to observe the constellation of factors shaping a character’s representational paradigm. Students are expected to give group presentations and are strongly encouraged to contribute questions and opinions during the discussions.

Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, Jeanette Winterson (1985)
