Die deutsche Romantik wurde mit Wackenroders "Herzensergiessungen eines kunstliebenden Klosterbruders" und Tiecks "Franz Sternbalds Wanderungen" eingeläutet. Da wurden die Bilder der religiösen Überlieferung zum Ideal der Kunst und zum Gegenstand einer Ästhetik der Andacht. Der wechselseitige Zusammenhang von Literatur und Kunst blieb für die Romantik bindend bis hin zur Sakralisierung der Landschaft bei Caspar David Friedrich und den erzählten Bildern E.T.A. Hoffmanns.
