Britain was the country that pioneered industrialization from the late 18th century onwards and used to be known, by the mid-19th century, as 'the workshop of the world'. Today, by contrast, the British economy relies chiefly on the service and the financial sectors, while manufacturing industries have faded into insignificance. This course will chart the transformation of Britain into a post-industrial economy, investigate the causes bringing it about as well as its long-term effects on the make-up of British society.
The relevant literature for this course will be made available at the start of the semester.
