This seminar is primarily an introduction to Old and Middle English, but we will also cover issues like language contact and change, and learn more about the medieval culture Old and Middle English were embedded in.
We will be reading and listening to excerpts from a variety of different original texts, among them Beowulf, The Dream of the Rood and Old English riddles. This is not as difficult as you might think, and you will, of course, not be expected to become fluent in Old or Middle English in the course of one semester.
If possible you should also attend Dr. Angela Stock's class „From Warriors to Knights: Medieval English Literature“, in which you can concentrate on the literary aspects of the texts we will be reading.
