239774 Shakespeare's Jealousy Plays (S) (SoSe 2012)

Contents, comment

"The green-eyed monster, Jealousy" is one that Shakespeare wrestled with in five of his plays, each time choosing a different genre and thus a different 'treatment': Much Ado About Nothing (c. 1597) is a comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor (c. 1598) is a farce, Othello (c. 1603) is a tragedy, and Cymbeline and The Winter's Tale (c. 1612) are tragicomedies/romances. We are going to look at all five plays selectively and seek to understand how each one activates a variety of early modern concepts about love, marriage, passion, identity and society.

Requirements for participation, required level

You should have completed at one of the two courses Analysing and Interpreting Literary Texts (Brit Lit or Am Lit).
