Parameters of the studies of national cultures, as important as they continue to be for the understanding of fundamental mythologies and ideologies of nation-states and their assumed imaginary community, need to be complemented by parameters of progressive, overlapping, and intersecting geopolitical and cultural spaces. Critics like Appadurai view cultures as a complex systems of flows that affect the whole globe (1996) and as scholarly reaction to that Reichardt argues that a so-called “global turn” in the field of cultural studies, literary and film studies is taking place (2010). We will explore how literature, film, and media are shaped by global flows and how they simultaneously express the dynamics, conflicts, and changes that emerge from globalization. We will focus on ethnic/postethnic literatures, films and the new media in the Americas and beyond (including Britain). The course will end with the participation of all students in an international conference on “Global Flows” on July 21st. Speakers will include scholars from the US, Mexico, and Ireland. We will upload reading material in late April/early May.
