This course provides an overview of differences between countries in gender inequalities on the labor market (e.g. gender income gap, gender authority gap, differences in labor market participation rates and average working hours) and discusses possible explanations for these differences. First, individual-level explanations for gender inequalities on the labor market will be reviewed (e.g. supply and demand side arguments). Then, context specific explanations will be linked to these individual-level explanations, broadening the understanding of how the country context affects women’s labor market involvement and their career outcomes. For this, we will discuss theories which highlight the importance of the welfare state and family friendly state policies as well as arguments which stress the importance of the cultural and economic country context. Next to insights in possible explanations for differences in gender inequalities on the labor market this course offers the possibility to broaden scientific skills. For example it is required to identify the main message of scientific texts, to search relevant literature, and to present and discuss existing research.
