Der Begriff Globalisierung ist in unserer heutigen Welt omnipräsent und extrem einflussreich geworden. Welche Phänomene deckt er ab und wie verändern sich die dahinter stehenden Konzepte im Wandel der Zeit? Das Seminar verfolgt das Ziel, den Studierenden ein Verständnis für die Geschichte der Globalisierung zu vermitteln und in die damit verbundenen theoretischen Konzepte und historischen Interpretationen einzuführen.
Im ersten Teil des Seminars geht es um konzeptionelle und theoretische Fragen zur Geschichte der Globalisierung: Imperialismus und Kolonialismus; Zentrum und Peripherie; Universalismus und Eurozentrismus; Modernisierung und Moderne. Im zweiten Teil liegt der Fokus auf den verschiedenen Phasen und Erscheinungen der Globalisierung, die mit Konzepten wie Interaktion und Transfer, Kooperation und Wettbewerb eingefangen werden. Desweiteren beschäftigt sich das Seminar mit spezifischen Problemstellungen, die mit der Globalisierung verbunden sind: Transport, Kommunikation, Handel, Migration, Konsumption und Wissenstransfer.
