Welche Vorstellungen über das Riechvermögen und über die Natur der Gerüche haben in der Moderne kursiert? Wie haben sie auf soziale und kulturelle Verhaltensweisen gewirkt? "Auf den ersten Blick gesehen", ist Geruch eine subjektive Angelegenheit und steht somit im Widerstreit zum Gebot der Objektivität der Wissenschaften. Dennoch hat es viele Klassifizierungen und Theorien gegeben, die den Anspruch der Objektivität erhoben. Im Seminar werden wir zunächst verschiedene theoretische Ansätze, u.a. aus der Kulturgeschichte, der Philosophie und der Anthropologie diskutieren. Auf dieser Basis werden wir Fallstudien zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte des Geruchs erstellen.
