239545 Representations of the American South: Literature and Film (S) (WiSe 2011/2012)

Contents, comment

In this course we trace, analyze, and compare literary and cinematic representations of the South in the 19th century and the 20 century. The South and its histories have nourished a unique regional imaginary in relation to religion and race particularly. While we explore multifaceted aspects of Southern society and history, our primary focus will be on the changing cultural constructions and representations of race. The reading material will include classics by authors such as Frederick Douglas, William Faulkner, Richard Wright, Katherine Anne Porter, and Flannery O’Connor among others and films like Intruder in the Dust, To Kill a Mockingbird, Mississippi Burning, and Mississippi Masala.
