English is the most prominent lingua franca worldwide nowadays. But what exactly is a lingua franca? Where is it used, by whom, and how? Why is the notion of internationality important and are there also “intranational” linguae francae?
This course will provide students with an overview of English as an international means of communication, its spread, and effects on speakers with various linguistic backgrounds. Alternative concepts and conflicts within the field of English as an International Language are discussed, as are implications on education and language policies.
Students will be required to do thorough and regular reading without which successful participation in this class will not be possible. Due to thematic overlap it is not recommended to attend this and the Language and Globalization class. Students who have taken Global English, Lingua Franca or related classes in the past must contact the teacher in advance.
