Uneheliches Kind, Halbjude, Bisexueller, Ethnopoet und Popliterat – biographisch wie literarisch war Hubert Fichte (1935-1986) ein Grenzgänger. Als Reisender und als Schreibender überschreitet Fichte geographische, kulturelle und ästhetische Grenzen und rückt dabei marginalisierte Kulturen ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit: Volkskultur, populäre Kultur, Subkultur. Mit der thematischen Hinwendung zu Drogenkonsum und Prostitution, Voodoo und Graffiti korrespondiert darstellerisch die Vermengung von Dokumentation und Fiktion, das Spiel mit Autobiographischem oder auch die Annäherung von Text und Fotographie. Im Seminar soll durch eingehende Textlektüre und Diskussion zentraler literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Aspekte ein Überblick über das Werk Hubert Fichtes von seinem ersten Roman „Das Waisenhaus“ (1964) bis zu seinem unvollendeten Großprojekt, dem ,roman fleuve‘ „Die Geschichte der Empfindlichkeit“ (entstanden ab 1974) gewonnen werden.
