Der Nibelungen-Stoff wurde seit dem 19. Jahrhundert nicht nur für das Sprechtheater (z.B. Friedrich Hebbel, Die Nibelungen, 1862), sondern auch für das Musiktheater bearbeitet. Im Zentrum steht dabei Richard Wagners monumentales Musikdrama "Der Ring des Nibelungen" (1854/74), das bis heute als Inbegriff einer Mittelalteroper gilt. Doch auch weniger ernste Stücke wie Oscar Straus' Operette "Die lustigen Nibelungen" (1904) oder das Musical "Lass' das Hagen!" (1967) von Horst Pillau und Siegfried Ulbrich zählen zu den neuzeitlichen Reformulierungen der "alten maeren" auf dem Musiktheater.
Das Seminar wird sich schwerpunktmäßig mit Richard Wagner befassen, rückt jedoch auch die weiteren Rezeptionsfälle des "Nibelungenlieds" in Dichtung, Drama und Film in den Blick.
