Seit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts ist die fundamentale Rolle der Gene für alles Leben auf der Welt bekannt. In den letzten Jahrzehnten haben sich das Wissen über die Funktionsweise von Genen, die Möglichkeiten, individuelle Genome zu erforschen und vor allem auch die Manipulationsmöglichkeiten an Genen drastisch erweitert. Dadurch sind ganz neue Handlungsspielräume entstanden, am prominentesten in der Medizin und Landwirtschaft. In dem Seminar werden eine Reihe von prominenten ethischen Themen behandelt, die mit diesen Handlungsspielraum zu tun haben: u.a. prädiktive Diagnostik, Keimbahneingriffe, Chimären, grüne Gentechnik und synthetische Biologie.
