In diesem Kurs wird ein wesentlicher Teil der lateinischen Formenlehre und Syntax vermittelt, eingeübt und an Originaltexten angewendet sowie ein grundständiger Wortschatz erarbeitet. Mithilfe von Wortschatz, Formenlehre und Satzsyntax soll am Ende dieses Kurses die Fähigkeit erreicht sein, Originaltexte einfacher bis mittlerer Komplexität selbständig übersetzen und verstehen zu können. Anhand der Texte werden Grundkenntnisse in römischer Kultur und Geschichte sowie deren Rezeption vermittelt.
Der Kurs wird im Sommersemester als Kurs II fortgeführt. Am Ende von Kurs II sollen Kenntnisse und Anwendungsfertigkeiten soweit vertieft und gefestigt sein, daß das Latinum in einer staatlichen Erweiterungsprüfung erworben werden kann.
