Von der Illustrierten ‚Die Dame‘ 1928 nach demjenigen Buch befragt, das den stärksten Eindruck bei ihm hinterlassen habe, gab Bertolt Brecht die bekannte Antwort: „Sie werden lachen: die Bibel.“ Wer sein Werk nur ein wenig kennt, hat keinen Grund, zu lachen. Die Aussage kann für viele Autorinnen und Autoren bis heute gelten, auch für solche, die der Religion kritisch gegenüberstehen. Das wird nicht zuletzt an der literarischen Qualität der Bücher liegen, die zum Kanon der Heiligen Schrift zählen.
Das Seminar wird sich zunächst einen Überblick verschaffen über die vielfältigen literarischen Formen der Bibel. Im zweiten Teil werden exemplarisch Werke aus der europäischen Literatur behandelt, bei denen der intertextuelle Bezug zur Bibel bestimmend ist. Vorschläge aus dem Kreis der Teilnehmenden sind sehr willkommen.
