Der Schwarze Tod, also die Pestepidemie in der Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts, ist immer wieder das Thema umfangreicher Forschungsarbeiten. Barbara Tuchman bezeichnete die Pest als "das verheerendste Ereignis der überlieferten Geschichte", Egon Friedell sah in ihrem Wüten gar das "Konzeptionsjahr des Menschen der Neuzeit". Wie auch immer man zu diesen Aussagen stehen mag: Unstrittig ist, dass der Schwarze Tod einen tiefen Einschnitt darstellt. Die Übung will sich mit der Pestepidemie der Jahre 1347-1352 in Europa beschäftigen und die Folgen dieser Katastrophe für die mittelalterliche Gesellschaft herausarbeiten.
