Die Frage, wie die römische Republik ihre direkten Herrschaftsgebiete außerhalb Italiens verwalte, bildet ein Schlüssel zum Verständnis des römischen Imperiums insgesamt. Aussagekräftige Quellen zur Statthalterschaft des Verres in Sizilien, Caesars in Spanien, des Flaccus und des Quintus Cicero in Asia sowie des Marcus Cicero in Kilikien sollen die regionalen Unterschiede und die strukturellen Gemeinsamkeiten des provinzialen Regiments der Republik beleuchten. Lateinkenntnisse sind unabdingbar.
