Den Ausgangspunkt der Lehrveranstaltung bilden der "Visual turn" bzw. der "Iconic turn" in den Geisteswissenschaften. Stehende und bewegte Bilder finden Verwendung in der historischen Forschung, insbesondere wenn es um die Geschichte der Mentalitäten und des Alltags sowie um die Geschichte der materiellen Kultur geht. Bilder werden aber auch in zunehmendem Maße zur Erforschung des politischen Raumes herangezogen. Im Grundseminar/in der Übung wird nach Antwort auf die Frage gesucht, in welchem Maße visuelle Quellen dazu beitragen können, Erklärungen für den Stalinismus als Herrschaftsform zu finden.

Die erfolgreiche Teilnahme am Grundseminar/an der Übung setzt regelmäßige Teilnahme und aktive Mitarbeit voraus. Das Grundseminar Theorie in der Geschichtswissenschaft endet mit einer benoteten mündlichen Prüfung. Für die Absolvierung der Übung ist die Erbringung einer benoteten Einzelleistung, in der Regel ein Referat oder ein Essay, erforderlich.
