232108 From Performance to Freeze Frame: Documentary Film on Music in the Americas (S) (SoSe 2011)

Contents, comment

Departing from theoretical reflections on fact and fiction, document and documentary, archive material and performance, we will delineate major developments in documentary film making. Our major focus will be on documentary film-making on music in the Americas. We will analyze films on Cuban music, African American music, Chicano/a rock and on the migration of music (US-Cuba, Brasil-US). Guiding questions will address the intertextual nature of documentary film on music, cultural, transcultural, and aesthetic perspectives of documentary film-making, and ways of representing self and other in documentary film.
