The seminar takes place partly digital, live at the stated time & partly digital, self-study (online synchronous / asynchronous).

This course will be held partially in English and partially in German. It introduces inclusive and special education in a comparative and international context. At the same time exclusive moments of different school systems are analyzed with the students. The perspective chosen in the course is a global one. It serves as a basis for a broad understanding of former and current developments in educational systems all over the world.
As a lead-in, an overview and reflection of different ideas of special education as well as inclusion theories and definitions are given. Proceeding from this basis onwards, the course then offers an outline of the historical and recent developments in special and inclusive education in different countries around the world. It will also examine how the national developments relate to global issues like the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities or the Salamanca Declaration.
Students are expected to engage critically in these topics through readings, reflections and through conducting an individually set up short interview study based on their own questions about the topic of the course. The findings of the students’ investigation will then be described and discussed in the course. Also, the conclusions and the salient developments for each country will be compared amongst each other and within the frameworks of the theoretical foundation discussed at the beginning of the course.
In this course students gain an understanding of theories and definitions for Inclusion, Exclusion, and Special Education and will be enabled to explain those. Also, they gather knowledge about theories of Comparative and International Education. Additionally, students assess the issues of cultural, economic and social diversity and special needs and how these patterns permeate classrooms on a global level. They understand the challenges of teaching in special needs environment internationally. Furthermore, students reflect about their gathered knowledge of regional education systems and issues of inclusion and exclusion in these systems based on the theoretical groundwork of the first part of the course as well as on the own study results. They therefore learn during the course how to connect theoretical ideas with different ways of how to answer research questions with appropriate research methods.
The submissions can either be written in German or in English. If English is the language chosen, native-like proficiency is not expect as the focus of the course is on reflection of the content.
