Die Übung geht der Geschichte der lateinischen Sprache von der frühlateinischen über die altlateinische über die klassische Sprache eines Caesar und Cicero bis hin zur Spätantike nach und befaßt sich auf der Basis einschlägiger Sprachzeugnisse (Inschriften und zusammenhängende literarische Texte) mit dem jeweiligen Zustand der lateinischen Sprache.
Am Anfang stehen dabei generelle Betrachtungen zum Sprach- und Lautwandel, zum Konzept des Proto-Indoeuropäischen sowie die Stellung und Entwicklung des Lateinischen innerhalb dieses Systems.
