“It’s the economy, stupid!” This famous sentence of Bill Clinton points to the great importance economic matters have for U.S. American society, politics, and culture. The course looks at various aspects of the economy, business, and labor in the history and culture of the country from the founding of the nation to this day. Issues to be addressed in the course include, among others, the ideals and realities of agricultural and industrial economies, different examples of periods of economic boom and crisis, and the impact of globalization on the national economy. Besides selected theoretical texts, the course draws upon works of American literature and film dealing with matters of American economies, business, and labor.
All texts of the course will be made available electronically.
