In this seminar, we will be looking specifically at African-American Vernacular English (also known as Black English or Ebonics) on the levels of syntax, lexis and phonology. With this knowledge, we will then explore the cultural and historical archives of music by artists from Robert Johnson to Billie Holiday, The Sugar Hill Gang to Kendrick Lamar in an attempt to to better understand the black experience in the United States and the important role that language takes in the process of cultural production.
It is strongly recommended to have finished BM3 before attempting this seminar.
