Die Phonetik stellt verschiedene Theorien und Methoden zur Verfügung, mit denen lautliche Aspekte sprachlicher Kommunikation untersucht und beschrieben werden können. In allen Fällen sollen die lautlichen Besonderheiten mit phonetischen Werkzeugen beschrieben und in ihrem Bedingungszusammenhang analysiert werden. Das wichtigste Werkzeug wird das Analyseprogramm Praat sein.
