610065 Bilingual Education in the 21st Century (Typ: päd. und didakt. Fragen des Schulsports) (S) (SoSe 2011)

Contents, comment

This course will be an introduction to bilingual education, exploring the genesis and development of contemporary bilingual programmes around the world. To begin the semester we will look at the different understandings of what bilingual education is as political, cultural and educational forces have influenced the objectives of bilingual education in different countries. We will also consider the development of bilingual education models, paying particular attention to the European model of bilingual education, namely Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). The questions of what CLIL entails and how it can be implemented in the European context will be discussed.
This course will focus, in particular, on physical education (PE) as a CLIL subject. We will explore the possible advantages and disadvantages, as well as the learning opportunities PE can offer to language learning and vice versa. A number of sessions in this course will be used to develop and test CLIL PE teaching materials. Student-developed materials for CLIL PE will be presented in the Lampinghalle where we will analyse their effectiveness first-hand. In these sessions students will be required to bring their gym attire and be active participants. The 4Cs approach of culture, communication, content and cognition from Coyle, Hood and Marsh (2010) will be used as a framework to develop teaching materials. Topics of these sessions may be, for instance, the impact of female soccer in America, Rugby in New Zealand – the All Blacks, or considering trend sports in the Anglo-American realm.
