The course explores the cultural, social and political functions of music, focusing on a series of case studies ranging from propaganda to protest through this medium. Broader topics covered include: music and the Nazi experience; protest music in the 1960s; music propaganda in the ex-Yugoslavia; music and right-wing extremism in Germany; music and civil society in contemporary Russia.
The course will enable students to gain a deeper knowledge of the cultural and intellectual significance of this medium as well as to familiarize with the main scholarly approaches within the field.
