996008 Good Scientific Practice (WS) (SoSe 2020)

The workshop offers an introduction to issues of the ethical conduct in research, that is, the idea of good scientific practice. Spectacular cases of scientific misconduct, e.g., unethical experiments, fabrication of data, and extensive plagiarism, have received widespread media attention. But less spectacular and less obvious cases of misconduct are not at all uncommon. The workshop intends to enhance the participants’ awareness of the explicit regulations and implicit rules of conduct in research. Acquaintance with these rules will improve the participants’ research practice, and it will help them to recognise and to handle cases of misconduct of others.
The workshop is based on the recommendations of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Among the topics addressed are:
‒Local, national and international rules and regulations of “good scientific practice”
‒Ethical issues of research design: Are all research question and methods permissible?
‒Handling data (e.g., from surveys): Dos, don’ts, caveats
‒Handling the work of others: Plagiarism
‒Authorship and publication
‒Responsibility in the relationship of supervisors and the supervised
‒Conflicts of interest in academic research
‒How to deal with academic misconduct

The workshop will be conducted online through Zoom. The topic of the workshop requires that participants actively engage with the topic. To this end, and to counteract online learning fatigue, we have planned a variety of activities. Different forms of discussions, exercises, and lecture-like presentations will alternate, and we have scheduled frequent breaks.
