This block seminar on educational linguistics will examine teaching, learning and assessment in the multilingual context of South African Universities, and invite reflection on current responses to the increasing diversity of German Higher Education. We will begin with an account of contextual determinants of multilingual Higher Education in South Africa before dealing with a set of case studies in multilingual teaching, learning and assessment. Among others, we will discuss university language policies, models of multilingual pedagogy, provisioning of multilingual lecture resources, students’ multilingual learning strategies, and experimentation with multilingual assessment. The initiatives discussed will then provide a basis for German-South African comparisons.
Assessment will be structured as follows:
20% - regular attendance
30% - active participation in class (asking questions based on course content, analyses of texts assigned)
50% - Assignment (ex. short presentation or critical review of article during the seminar)
