230503 English Language Teaching Methods (secondary school) (S) (SoSe 2020)

Contents, comment

The course offers a brief historical survey of methods of teaching English as a foreign language and introduces major temporary approaches as well as some less mainstream approaches. There will also be a brief, practically-orientated introduction to assessment at secondary level.

In the digital teaching situation of summer semester 2020, although most of the input will be via written texts, slides or short videos, please go to the Lernraum and work through the material at the time designated for the seminar! That way, you can ask questions in the LernraumPlus chat or in forums, and we might try zoom conferencing as well.

Requirements for participation, required level

This seminar is specifically aimed at those planning to teach at secondary school level: Hauptschule, Realschule, Sekundarschule, Gymnasium or Gesamtschule. PM1 seminars should ideally be taken from around the 3rd semester on, after completing most of the basic modules.

Student information

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

Participants will give group presentations, typically involving micro-teaching sequences, to complete the seminar requirements: everyone will also be expected to take part in the student-generated Methods Challenge near the end of the semester.
