Breviarien stellen im ausgehenden 4. Jahrhundert die vorherrschende historiographische Form dar. Die Übung soll anhand von kurzen Beispielen im lateinischen Original die Geschichtsbilder der Spätantike erarbeiten. Besonders wirkmächtige Texte wie Eutrop, Justin oder die sog. Epitome werden im Umfang von 1-2 Seiten pro Woche gelesen; Lateinkenntnisse auf dem Niveau von Caesar oder Nepos sind notwendig. Die Übung kann auch als Grundseminar Historiographie (GSH) besucht werden, denn die geschichtstheoretischen und narrativen Konzepte der Texte spielen eine größere Rolle.
