Die Vorlesung verfolgt zwei grundlegende Fragen:
a) Was ist eigentlich Literaturgeschichte und wie kann man sie theoretisch begründen und konzipieren?
b) Was ist die literarische Moderne; wann will man sie beginnen lassen und wie kann man sie strukturieren?
Das bekannteste und in der schulischen und akademischen Lehre noch immer beliebteste Modell für Literaturgeschichtsschreibung gliedert in literarische Epochen. Das ist nicht unsinnig, birgt aber viele Probleme. Sie werden in der Vorlesung diskutiert; ergänzend zum epochengeschichtlichen Modell wird ein struktur- und kommunikationsgeschichtlich verfahrendes Modell vorgestellt und an literarischen Beispielen erläutert. Die Vorlesung ist auf zwei Semester angelegt; man muss aber nicht unbedingt an beiden Vorlesungen teilnehmen. Im Wintersemester wird es um einen Überblick über das 18. und 19. Jahrhundert gehen. Vorkenntnisse sind nicht erforderlich, wohl aber die Bereitschaft, einige literarische Texte zu lesen und wirklich mitzudenken.
