Im Mittelpunkt des Seminars steht Franz Kafkas Romanfragment "Amerika", von dem zu Kafkas Lebzeiten nur das erste Kapitel "Der Heizer" (1913) erschienen ist. Ein junger Mann wird von seiner böhmischen Familie verstoßen und schifft sich nach Amerika ein. In New York angekommen, begegnet er seinem Onkel und es eröffnen sich ihm ungeahnte Perspektiven. Doch alles kommt ganz anders.

"Amerika" gilt neben "Das Schloss" und "Der Prozess" als Kafkas dritter großer Roman. Er soll in dem Seminar in erzähltheoretischer Hinsicht sowie unter Aspekten der zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts in Mitteleuropa kursierenden Amerika-Bilder und Amerika-Konstrukte untersucht werden.
