Die Vorlesung beschäftigt sich vor allem mit den Disziplinen Phonetik/Phonologie und Morphologie.
Während der Gegenstand der Phonetik die artikulatorische Beschreibung und physikalische Messung der Laute unabhängig von ihrem Sprachsystem ist, stehen in der Phonologie die lautlichen Strukturen als Einheiten im System einer Einzelsprache (des Deutschen) im Vordergrund. Vertiefend behandelt werden: die Transkription der deutschen Umgangssprache mit IPA, Merkmalsmatrix und phonologische Regel sowie suprasegmentale Phonologie.
Die Morphologie befasst sich mit dem Aufbau von Wörtern und Wortformen. Neben einem Überblick über verschiedene Teilbereiche der Morphologie (Flexion und Wortbildung) werden morphologische Termini wie z.B. Affix und Morphem geklären, die für eine Analyse der Wortstruktur entscheidend sind. Vertiefend behandelt werden im Bereich der Flexion das Plural- und Kasussystem des Deutschen, die Systematik der Tempus/Modusmarkierungen in einfachen Verbformen, die komplexen Prädikate und im Bereich der Wortbildung Derivation, Konversion und Komposition.
