After assessing London's significance as England's (and latterly Britain's) political, social and cultural focal point, members of this class will present to the class a portfolio on the topic of their choice as work-in-progress. Possible topics include: Royal London; London Governs; Legal London; London Goes Shopping; Criminal London; London Celebrates; Diseased London; etc.
Portfolios must include fictional as well as non-fictional and visual material and cover the last millenium (more or less).
You should have completed "Analysing and Interpreting Literary Texts" (British or American) and "Social and Cultural Studies, Britain".

Portfolios; more comprehensive for 3 LP (= 90 hours of work, incl. attendance) than for 2 LP (= 60 hours of work, incl. attendance).
N.B.: This seminar is designed as a British History 1 course, that is, it will focus on history pre-1800. However, it will be possible to count it as British History 2 (post-1800) if you select a topic/focus that is post-1800.
There will be no record of regular attendance, apart from the session in which you present your work-in-progress. However, it is to be hoped that a sense of collegiality and curiosity about others' work and ideas will induce many class members to show up regularly and provide feedback to their fellow students on their projects.
