This course is designed to introduce the 18th century rise of the novel (Ian Watt) and to analyze major examples of the new genre in detail.

• Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe (1719)
• Samuel Richardson, Pamela (1740)
• Henry Fielding, Tom Jones (1749)
• Oliver Goldsmith, The Vicar of Wakefield (1766)
As there will be a lot of pages to master I strongly recommend starting to read during the term break!
