The spread of English around the world has been rapid and has given us a diverse range of varieties of English. This course intends to provide an account of the evolution of new varieties of English by looking at the historical and social factors that have shaped them on all levels of linguistic description. We will therefore explore topics such as the distinctiveness of the sociolinguistic contexts of varieties of English, the ranges and domains in which the varieties are used across cultures, the processes and historical events that determine the distinctiveness of each major variety at various linguistic levels as well as the relationship of the linguistic creativity to acculturation in distinct socio-cultural contexts in all parts of the English-using world.
