Ein charakteristisches Merkmal des Fremd- und Zweitsprachenerwerbs ist, dass muttersprachliche Kompetenz in den seltensten Fällen erreicht wird. Zu erwarten ist daher, dass der Erwerb "irgendwann" zum Stillstand kommt. In solchen Fällen wird von Fossilisierung gesprochen.
In diesem Seminar werden theoretische Ansätze diskutiert, die Fossilisierung zu erklären versuchen. Fossilisierung als Produkt vs. Prozess oder lokale vs. globale Fossilisierung sind einige Konstrukte, mit denen wir uns beschäftigen werden. Dabei werden wir eine "kleine Zeitreise" unternehmen: Die Reise beginnt mit Selinkers Beitrag 1972, in welchem der Begriff "Fossilisierung" geprägt wurde und führt über neuere Ansätze zum Phänomen der Fossilisierung schließlich zu didaktischen Vorschlägen, um fossilisierte Sprachstrukturen "aufzubrechen" (Defossilisierung).
