Social science starts to acknowledge that we are not born as “blank slates”, and that not only social forces but also genetic endowments enable and constrain our age-graded development, not least successes and failures, educational and status attainment. Far from the old juxtaposition of “nature versus nurture”, recent research at the intersection of social science and genetics investigates what societies make out of variations in the genetic makeup everybody has, how this develops over the life course, how the society gets “under the skin” and how this structures the life course in addition and in interaction with social conditions. The seminar gives an introduction into basic concepts of this fast developing research field and presents selected results primarily for skill development and educational attainment.
