300891 Global Religion, Gender and Theory (S) (WiSe 2019/2020)

In this theory class, we will first read and discuss sociological texts that examine religion as a generator and as a medium of globalization (e.g. R. Robertson and J.-A. Chirico; L. Beaman and P. Beyer). Empirically, we will then focus on selected religions and regions, and deepen our understanding of the relation between global dynamics of religious transformation and local social conditions, e.g. political institutions that regulate the social status and societal relevance of religion. Theoretically, the relation between context, social culture and social structure will be a focal point. In this regard, gender will be introduced as pivotal axis of social positioning and inequality within different religions, and as a core element of religious symbolization in varying local religious contexts (cf. S. Mahmood, The Politics of Piety; T. El-Or Educated and Ignorant; R.M. Jelks, Masculinity, Religion and Modernism; A. Whitehead, Gender Ideology and Religion).
