Die Theorie sozialer Felder gehört zu den wichtigsten Strängen der aktuellen soziologischen Theoriedebatte. Einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Belebung der Diskussion um Stabilität und Wandel in Feldern lieferte das 2012 erschienene und vieldiskutierte Buch „Theory of Fields“ von Neil Fligstein und Doug McAdam. In Anlehnung an und gleichzeitiger Abgrenzung von verschiedenen Ansätzen entwickeln die Autoren den Begriff des strategischen Handlungsfeldes. Dabei handelt es sich um Sozialordnungen, deren Dynamik durch das konflikthafte Interagieren zwischen „incumbents“ und „challengers“ konstituiert wird. Der Feldbegriff liegt quer zu der klassischen Unterscheidung von Mikro- und Makroebene und soll sich für die Beschreibung unterschiedlicher sozialer Entitäten (z.B. Staaten und Industriezweige, aber auch Abteilungen von Organisationen) eignen.
Ziel des Kurses ist, anhand des Buches "Theory of Fields" die zentralen Eckpunkte der Theorie gemeinsam zu erarbeiten.
