Grabininschriften zählen zu den ältesten Zeugnissen der lateinischen Sprache und wurden (nicht selten in metrischer Form) bis zum Ende der Antike (und darüber hinaus) weiter gepflegt. Auch in die (durch das Medium Buchrolle publizierte) Literaturdichtung haben sie immer wieder Eingang gefunden. Das Wechselspiel von ursprünglichem Gebrauchstext einerseits und "autonomer" Kunst andererseits machen dort ihren spezifischen Reiz aus. Das ebenso literaturgeschichtlich wie kulturhistorisch ausgerichtete Seminar möchte sich anhand ausgewählter Beispiele einen Einblick in die faszinierende Welt römischer Grabepigramme verschaffen.
