230636 Culture and Literature in Contact in the USA: Representations of Ethnicity (S) (SoSe 2010)

Contents, comment

Departing from theories of ethnicity (Sollors), ethnic boundaries (Barth), new identities (Hall) and postethnic identities (Hollinger) we will explore ethnicity as a dynamic socio-cultural process and pay close attention to representations of ethnicity in cinema (Crash, Zelig), in literature (James Baldwin, Bharati Mukherjee, William Faulkner) and in tourism (contemporary Chicago blues scene). Course requirements are regular class participation, class moderation and a group project as part of the seminar’s participation in the international conference of Trans/Inter/Intra-Cultural Dynamics in the Americas (Zif Bielefeld / June 14-15 Organizor: Raussert).
