230823 Englisch: Reading for the Social Sciences (level B1+) (S) (SoSe 2010)

Contents, comment

This course is designed to help students of the social sciences at the B1+ level deal with their coursework in academic reading. Using text material on social science topics from the Internet and textbooks, the course will train the skills listed below. Towards the end of the course, easy academic articles will be covered.

• Techniques for quick reading (skimming, scanning)
• Identifying the text structure (‘skeletizing’ a text)
• Comparing viewpoints in a text
• Excerpting a text effectively
• Essential lexical strategies for reading (dealing with unfamiliar words, building up an academic vocabulary)
• Putting together a bibliography

Requirements for participation, required level

Successful completion of the course English Intermediate Part I, English Accelerated, or C-Test of the Language Center (for dates please see http://www.uni-bielefeld.de/fachsprachenzentrum/tests.html).
